( Sponsored By Irwins (Dungarvan) & East Cork Oil. )

The Villierstown Primary Schools' fourth Clipboard Quiz took place in Villierstown Church or Villierstown Community Centre as it is known as nowadays on Tuesday, 19th. May and Tuesday, 26th. May. It was a resounding success with a total of 104 teams in attendance. Twenty schools participated in our Quiz and they are as follows: Glenbeg N.S., St. Mary's (Dungarvan), Girls' N.S.(Cappoquin), Boys' N.S.(Cappoquin), Carriglea N.S., Ballinameela N.S., St. Joseph's N.S.(Dungarvan), Coolnasmear N.S., Aglish N.S., Modeligo N.S., Scoil Gharbhain, Ballycurrane N.S., Ballyduff Upper N.S., Kilbrien N.S., Abbeyside N.S., Lismore Presentation, Kinsalebeg N.S., Lios Mor Mochuda, Touraneena N.S. and Villierstown N.S.OnTuesday, 19th. May, our Quiz was for third and fourth classes and the following teams emerged victorious:-

2nd. Ballinameela N.S. with 45 pts.

3rd. Abbeyside N.S. with 44 pts.

4th. Abbeyside N.S. with 44 pts.

We actually had a tie among the above four teams, Scoil Gharbhain and Ballinameela N.S. tied for first place as both teams had 45 pts. each.. After an extra round of questions Scoil Gharbhain occupied first place with a score of 2 extra pts. while Ballinameela N.S. took second prize by scoring 1 extra pt. Both teams from Abbeyside N.S. tied for third place and the victorious Abbeyside team defeated their classmates by 3 pts. to 1 pt.

Fourth Class

1st. Ballinameela N.S. with 48 pts. Pictured below.

2nd. St. Joseph's (Dungarvan) with 47 pts.

3rd. Coolnasmear N.S. with 46 pts.

As can be seen from the above score, there was a clear cut result here with no ties and therefore no further rounds to contend with. Ballinameela N.S. narrowly defeated St. Joseph's N.S. and Coolnasmear N.S. whom I must say performed very well considering that the total number of points was 50.

Our next big night was Tuesday, 26th. May and teams from 5th. and 6th. classes made their appearance and the following schools were successful.

Fifth Class

1st. St. Joseph's N.S.(Dungarvan) with 47 pts.Pictured below.

2nd. Carriglea N.S. with 46 pts.

3rd. Scoil Gharbhain with 44 pts.

4th. Boys' N.S. (Cappoquin) with 44 pts.

5th. Abbeyside N.S. with 44 pts.

As can be seen from the above score, there was a clear cut result for first and second place but we had a tie for third place among Scoil Gharbhain, Boys' N.S. (Cappoquin) and Abbeyside N.S. The latter team was eliminated after the first round and so Cappoquin Boys' N.S. and Scoil Gharbhain had to compete once again for third place and Scoil Gharbhain emerged victorious by defeating Cappoquin Boys' N.S. by 3 pts. to 2 pts.

Sixth Class

1st. Carriglea N.S. with 50 pts.Pictured below.

2nd. Ballyduff Upper with 49 pts.

3rd. St. Mary's N.S(Dungarvan)with 48 pts.

Carriglea N.S. came first here with a marvellous score of 50 points out of a total of 50 pts. They were followed close behind by Ballyduff Upper who occupied second place and we had a tie again for third place between two teams from St. Mary's N.S. (Dungarvan). After four extra rounds the victorious St. Mary's team defeated their schoolmates by 2 pts. to 1 pt.

There was great excitement and tension as the final score was announced for the best performing school. Carriglea N.S. emerged as the best overall school with a total score of 96 pts. and they won the long sought after Irwin Shield.

The teams from each standard were presented with their trophies and the schools which had the best teams on each night were also presented with the following perpetual trophies:-

Best 3rd. Class ( East Cork Oil Trophy ) was presented to Scoil Gharbhain

Best 4th. Class (East Cork Oil Trophy) was presented to Ballinameela N.S.

Best 5th. Class ( John Cunningham Trophy ) was presented to St. Joseph's N.S. ( Dungarvan )

Best Performing School ( Irwin Shield) was presented to Carriglea N.S.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the following who helped out on the nights concerned. Quiz Masters:- Tom Scanlan and Ned Keane. Many thanks also to the Quiz Panel, collectors, photographer, score-keepers and receptionists, all of whom comprised of parents, teachers, past-pupils and friends. Everyone was very much aware of the absence of Rita Ronayne ( foundress of our Quiz ). Rita passed away to her eternal reward last March and we all can visualise Rita organising her own Quiz in heaven. Ar dheis De go raibh a h-anam. We would also like to thank all the teachers who encouraged their schools to participate in the Quiz as the last term is a very hectic one with all the hurling matches, girls' football matches, camogie matches and Primary Schools' Sports. Many parents were amazed at the high standard of General Knowledge among their children as the final scores on each night were very high, the highest score being 50 pts. out of 50 pts. which is no mean achievement. We would like to congratulate the teachers on inculcating such a high standard of General Knowledge in their schools and supporting us over the last eighteen years. Our Quiz would not be such a success without your great commitment to your schools and pupils.

We are very grateful to Villierstown Community Centre for allowing us the use of their facilities and to our sponsors Irwins (Dungarvan), East Cork Oil, Avonmore/Waterford Group and John Cunningham Building Services Ltd. whose kind sponsorship made our Quiz possible. We would also like to wish two great supporters of our Quiz down through the years i.e. Eileen O' Mahony ( Principal, Glenbeg N.S.) and Myra Baumann( Principal, Carriglea N.S.) the very best in their retirement and we hope that their successors will be as loyal to our Quiz as they were in the past.
