Cumann na mBunscol an Dúin.
2009 Presentation to retiring colleagues.
The Coiste of Cumann an mBunscol an Dúin devoted their September gathering to the recognition of the service of two retiring colleagues viz. Hurling coach Paddy Braniff and school principal Leo Flanagan.
The name of Paddy Braniff is widely associated with hurling over a long period of time. His exploits in the Ballygalget club and as a regular member of the Down hurling teams in the sixties are well known throughout the county. The success of hurling outside the Ards peninsula is attributed to his association as mentor to a variety of teams over the years.
Paddy was appointed part time hurling coach with the Primary Schools after his retirement from work during the late 90's and spend many happy and fruitful days going from one end of the county to the other where he was a familiar face both on the playing field and with the teaching staff. He was a tireless worker devoting much more than his required hours to bring the game to the large and small school from Newry to Bangor and from Strangford to Ballyvarley. He had a brilliant way with his young pupils and they enjoyed his lessons which he delivered with great humour and fun. Many schools and young pupils will miss the man with the sliothars, hurleys and helmets, Paddy always arrived with a car weighed down with all the gear necessary for the session.
Many of Paddy's pupils have progressed to represent their clubs and also get onto U-14, U-16 and Minor teams and he must get a great sense of achievement when he sees their names appear on County teams.
Presenting Paddy with a hurling figurine, An Cathaoirleach Collie Bell paid many tributes to him and bemoaned the loss of such a vibrant coach to Cumann na mBunscol an Dúin and wished him well for the future.
Another presentation was made to Leo Flanagan for his assistance in the organising of competitions for Cumann na mBunscol an Dúin over the past twenty-one years. During his time in Drumaness P.S. and St. Patrick's Ballynahinch Leo did much to encourage Gaelic games and culture as well as finding time to assist in Cumann na mBunscol activities. He was presented with a football figurine by an Cathaoirleach who appreciated his contribution over the years.
An Runai, Brendan Rice presented a Programme of Events for this school year to all present and copies have since been distributed to all participating schools. Any school not in the receipt of this can have a copy by contacting Brendan Rice.
