Cumann na mBunscol an Duin – Annual Table Quiz 2005
The Annual Table Quiz for Primary Schools was held in Bryansford Sports Hall on Wed 2nd February 2005. Many local schools accepted this as an opportunity to reveal their expertise on all aspects of Irish cultural and general knowledge. Each school was represented by a team of four and this year 17 teams competed for the coveted Peter Walsh Trophy and the honour of representing their county at the Ulster Final in Monaghan on March 12th.
The competition involved a ten round table quiz which included questions on history, geography, sport, folklore, politics, music and famous people, all with an Irish connection. As always the children enjoyed their participation in this year’s keenly contested event.
After three rounds the top team positions were as follows:
1st St. Patrick’s Newry with maximum points. Click here to see winners
2nd St. Patrick’s Mayobridge a point in arrears
3rd St. Malachy’s Castlewellan two points adrift
By the end of the sixth round the excitement was mounting with St. Patrick’s Mayobridge having leap frogged over St. Patrick’s Newry and St. Francis’ Drumaroad, making their first appearance in the competition, being level with St. Malachy’s Castlewellan.
1st St. Patrick’s Mayobridge by two points
2nd St. Patrick’s Newry
3rd St. Francis’ Drumaroad & St. Malachy’s Castlewellan
After nine rounds, an intriguing situation had developed with the following schools vying for the top position:
1st St. Patrick’s Mayobridge still leading by two points
2nd St. Patrick’s Newry
3rd St. Francis’ Drumaroad
Going into the final round, there was a buzz of excitement in the hall as several teams still had the ability to overcome St. Patrick’s Mayobridge or indeed improve there overall position and perhaps gain a place in the Ulster Finals.
After the final round, the team positions were:
1st St. Patrick’s Mayobridge
2nd St. Patrick’s Newry & St. Francis’ Drumaroad
3rd
4th St. Malachy’s Castlewellan
To establish second place, supplementary questions were given to the joint second placed teams and St. Patrick’s Newry won by a narrow margin.
The final order of merit in this year’s Cumann na mBunscol General Knowledge Quiz was as follows:
1st St. Patrick’s Mayobridge
2nd St. Patrick’s Newry
3rd St. Francis’ Drumaroad
4th St. Malachy’s Castlewellan
After the competition, Mr Michael Hanly congratulated all the schools who participated, thanked Mr Paddy Hardy for composing the quiz and he also thanked Bryansford GAC for the use of their excellent facilities. The top four teams were invited to represent Down in forthcoming Ulster final in Monaghan on 12th March. Dr Martin Walsh presented the Peter Walsh Trophy to the winning team, St. Patrick’s Mayobridge, and complimented the children on their level of interest and knowledge of their Irish culture.
