Photo: Seamus Fitzgerald accepting the Cumann na mBunscol National Award for Portláirge in 1999 from GAA President, Joe McDonagh, and Michael Grogan, M.D. of Roadstone Provinces Ltd., national sponsors.
Seamus Fitzgerald who has served as PRO for Cumann na mBunscol since the early nineties has decided to call it a day after a truly marvellous innings in that important post.
Over the past 15 years or so, Seamus has afforded wonderful coverage to GAA affairs at primary school level and it has truly been a labour of love for him and on several occasions his dedicated work was honoured at national level.
Our photo is from 1999 when Portláirge received a national award which was accepted by Seamus Fitzgerald from the then GAA President Joe McDonagh, along with Michael Grogan M.D. of Roadstone Provinces Ltd., the national sponsors.
Seamus who taught in Cork for 7 years was involved in promoting hurling and football while there and of course likewise for the 15 years which he spent teaching at Newtown N.S.
He also served for many years on the County Board Coiste Peil committee and has trained/coached teams at various levels with his club Abbeyside/Ballinacourty.
Of course, Seamus was a fine player during his playing career winning 3 county SFC medals with his club and recalls his marvellous goal against Ferrybank in the 1979 county decider.
Seamus intends taking a well deserved break and he advised that his wish for 2006 is that this is going to be the year for Waterford hurlers and that Justin Mc Carthy, Nicky Cashin, Shamie Hannon and Kevin Ryan can guide their charges here.
