RETIREMENT OF DONALL MACCARTHAIGH
(SECRETARY) 27-02-2008
Tipperary Cumann na mBunscol is sad to announce the retirement from
office of one of its most dedicated and hard-working officers, Dónall
MacCarthaigh. Dónall has played an integral part in Cumann na mBunscol
activity over the past 30 years since his graduation as a teacher in
1969. He has worked tirelessly as both an officer of the Coiste and as
teacher and Principal in Ballylooby NS outside Cahir.
During his time in Cumann na mBunscol he has served as Chairman,
Secretary, Primary Games Officer and County Board representative. He has
been a vital link in the promotion of our National Games, especially
Camogie and Ladies Football, in Tipperary. With Paul Brett he was
instrumental in the revival of Ladies Football within the County. From
four schools entering the initial competition there are now over fifty
entries each year. Indeed Camogie has been an even greater success with
only two schools contesting the first competition where there are
currently sixty-four entrants this year. Dónall will continue to work
with Camogie within the schools and there are plans this year to build
up a Camogie Development Squad from the Primary Schools within the
County.
At the AGM many teachers spoke highly of his dedication to the Cumann
and of his commitment to advancing Gaelic Games in schools across the
County. There are now over 150 schools affiliated to Cumann na mBunscol.
Christy Clancy, former
Chairman, spoke of the willingness of Dónall to help out that went above
the call of duty. Principal of Upperchurch NS, PJ Harrington said that
Dónall was a gentleman to deal with at all levels and present Chairman
Michael Heffernan said that Cumann na mBunscol in Tipperary will be
forever indebted to his contribution. Dónall thanked the teachers
involved in Cumann na mBunscol throughout the years. He wished the best
of luck to the incoming Secretary, Aodán Wrenn of Clerihan NS and said,
“It was a privilege and a pleasure to serve on Cumann na mBunscol in
Tipperary. As far as I was concerned the children of the County were
always my priority, to get them involved in as many games as possible. I
feel that I am retiring at a good time, especially after Tipperary has
won two Minor All-Irelands. I would like to thank all those who have
helped during my time in Cumann na mBunscol, the teachers I’ve worked
with, Coaches, and the County Board who have supported us so well. At
the end of my tenure I would hope that like, the old Indian proverb
goes, I left the campsite in better shape than I found it.”
