Scoil Scór Longfoirt 2006

Scoil Scór Longfort in conjunction with Cumann na mBunscol and the County GAA Committee decided to embark on a very ambitious project in 2006 - that of introducing Primary Schools Scór to all the schools in the county.

It was a tremendous success. Schools communities were delighted to have a platform to show the many and varied talents of the pupils.

As you are aware, Scór was originally introduced to clubs to provide winter activities for footballers when the football season was over. It is also a way of keeping our culture of dance, music and song alive in our parishes.

We decided to a with the general guidelines for Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsear but, in order to cater for small schools, introduced additional competitions of solo dancing (soft and hard shoe) and solo instrumental music.

We had two semi-finals and then a County Final in the Temperance Hall, Longford.  Everyone present – parents, teachers, adjudicators and children were entertained with the best of musical, acting and dancing talent.

The winners in each category received a trophy and all runners-up received medals.  There was also a beautiful perpetual trophy presented by Cumann na mBunscol to the ‘School of the Year.’  This was based on the participation level of that school in the competition ie. 5 points for each entry and 5 points for each win at county level.

The winners were as follows :

Drumlish N.S            Solo Dancing (soft) Solo Dancing (hard) Set Dancing‘
Dromard N.S  Group Instrumental Recitation
St. Colmcille’s N.S. Figure Dancing
Abbeylara N.S. Solo Singing
Ballinalee N.S Solo Instrumental
Ballymahon N.S Novelty Act
Clondra N.S Tráth na gCeist
Scoil Eimear Ballad Group

‘School of the Year’ was awarded to Drumlish N.S.

As a reward to all the winners we arranged a visit by ‘Sam Maguire’ to all the winning schools which went down a treat!

Afterwards schools expressed an interest in bringing set dancing and figure dancing into their schools. There was also a major interest in the instrumental music section and we hope to see even bigger entries next year.  County Longford Cumann Na mBunscol invite all counties to hold Scór competitions next year with the intention of having provincial finals and an All Ireland Final in April 2007.Any county requiring more information or interested in the above should contact Noeleen Rooney 087-6480752 or Marett Smith 086-6090082 or email scoilsportlongfoirt@eircom.net
