Details of the 2010 Mini Sevens Series

GAA/INTO Mini Sevens Changes for 2010 Series

A sub committee of An Coiste Náisiúnta met on a number of occasions before the summer and drew up a list of recommendations. It was felt that as this showpiece of Gaelic games was now in its third decade that it was timely to review the procedures governing Mini Sevens with a view to reflecting the ethos and philosophy of Go Games. Although many of the Go Games concepts were already included in Mini Sevens the recommendations were put to the general meeting that was held in Croke Park on Saturday 19th September. These recommendations were passed and beginning this school year the following are the changes:
1. There will no longer be any Regional Festivals.
2. Each county will select the pupils who will play in Croke Park.
3. Every year there are two hundred and forty places allocated for children for the Mini sevens. Each of the thirty-two counties is to be allocated at least six places with Cork receiving a total of twelve and Dublin twenty-four. Great Britain is to be allocated four places. This will be a total of two hundred and twenty places. There will be twenty places remaining and each province will receive five extra places in the same code each year. These extra places will be distributed on a rotational basis within each province under the direction and management of each provincial executive of Cumann na mBunscol.
4. On All Ireland Football and Hurling Final Days thirty counties will have one representative. Dublin will have four representatives and Cork will have two. There will be four places remaining that will be distributed one per province. This place will be determined as Gaeilge in alphabetical order within each province.
5. Players can only be selected for Mini Sevens in any code only once in a school lifetime. No player can represent a school more than once.
6. Schools should maximise the publicity for the boys and girls selected for Croke Park ensuring the Primary/National School gets the acknowledgments.
7. Players will be put into positions on the day at the discretion of the team managers. Jerseys will be numbered two to eleven with no distinctive goalkeeper's jersey.

It is the aspiration of Cumann na mBunscol Náisiúnta that as many different schools are involved in Croke Park on Mini sevens Days. The Young Whistlers programme will be left up to the discretion of the Mini Sevens Co-ordinator. The games will be played side-by-side down the length of the pitch in order to maximise crowd participation and for health and safety reasons. Each county is responsible for its own selection procedure - some counties have opted for a skills-based approach and some counties use a competition.
