Cumann na mBunscol An Dúin - INTO Hurling Finals.
The Annual INTO Hurling took place at Annsborough Playing fields recently. A total of 15 teams participated which augurs well for the future of hurling in County Down. As expected, the Ards peninsula was well represented by Portaferry, Kircubbin and Ballygalget ,but it was most encouraging to see teams from both East and South Down participating and giving a good account of themselves. The surprise packet in the hurling competition were the young lads from Magheramayo. Their skills and teamwork were most evident throughout the competition but the boys from St. Mary's Kircubbin had too much in reserve as they accounted for the Leitrim team in the first semi-final. St. Mary's Portaferry outshone the team from Ballygalget in the second semi-final to reach the final. So another final and the prospect of another titanic struggle between two close rivals and excellent hurling teams, St. Mary's Portaferry and St. Mary's Kircubbin. This encounter proved to be one of the highlights of the competition as these two skilful teams struggled for supremacy and the title of INTO hurling champions for 2009. Although Kircubbin started extremely well, the boys from Portaferry soon gained the upper hand and ran out winners by a scoreline of 3-2 to 0-2. After the competition, Paddy Hardy Leas Cathaoirleach Cumann na mBunscol an Dúin congratulated all these young hurlers for the sporting manner in which they conducted themselves and for the high level of skill portrayed throughout the competition. While dominance of the Ards schools was evident, this fast improving Magheramayo team and those from St. Joseph's Carryduff, St. Malachy's Castlewellan and Bunscoil Dún Padraig deserve great praise for their efforts in the competition.
