Cumann na mBunscol an Duin - Annual Table Quiz 2009

Legamaddy retain Quiz Title !
The Annual Table Quiz for Primary Schools was held in Castlewellan GAA Club on Friday 27 February 2009 with St. Patrick's Legamaddy becoming Quiz Champions of Down for the second year in a row. Many local schools accepted this opportunity to reveal their expertise on all aspects of Irish cultural and general knowledge. Each school was represented by a team of four and this year 17 teams competed for the coveted Peter Walsh Trophy and the honour of representing their county at the Ulster Final at Greenvale Hotel Cookstown on Wed. 11th March at 11.30 a.m.
The competition involved a ten round table quiz which included questions on history, geography, sport, folklore, politics, music and famous people, all with an Irish connection. As always the children enjoyed their participation in this year's keenly contested event.

After three rounds the top team positions were as follows:
1st St. Patrick's Boys' Downpatrick and St. St. Patrick's Legamaddy on 15 points with a host of other schools just points in arrears.

By the end of the sixth round the excitement was mounting with St. Patrick's Legamaddy in the lead by two points from St. Patrick's Boys and St. Matthew's Maghgeramayo a point adrift in 3rd place
1st St. Patrick's Legamaddy
2nd St. Patrick's Boys' Downpatrick
3rd St. Matthew's Magheramayo

After nine rounds, an intriguing situation had developed with Legamaddy still in pole position but now the Magheramayo team had leapfrogged over Downpatrick boys while the Finn team and St. Patrick's Newry completed the line at the top :
1st St. Patrick's Legamaddy - 47
2nd St. Matthew's Magheramayo - 44
3rd St. Patrick's Boys' Downpatrick. - 41
4th St. Mary's P.S Aughlisnafin & St. Patrick's Newry - 38
Going into the final round, there was a buzz of excitement in the hall as Magheramayo with their late surge still had the ability to overcome Legamaddy
and several teams had the opportunity to gain one of the four places in the Ulster Finals.

After the final round, the team positions were:
1st St. Patrick's Legamaddy with 53 points
2nd St. Matthew's Magheramayo with 47 points
3 rd St. Patrick's Boys' Downpatrick with 45 points
4th St. Mary's Aughlisnafin & St. Patrick's Newry with 43 points

This result necessitated a further round of questions to establish the final place of representatives for our county team. St. Patrick's Newry claimed this at the expense of the gallant St. Mary's Aughlisnafin team.
After the competition, Mr Collie Bell, Quizmaster and Cathaoirleach Cumann na mBunscol an Dúin, congratulated all the schools who participated, thanked Mr Paddy Hardy for composing the quiz and he also thanked Castlewellan GAC for the use of their excellent facilities. The top four teams were invited to represent Down in forthcoming Ulster final in Cookstown on 11th March. Mr Collie Bell Cathaoirleach Cumman na mBunscol an Dúin presented the Peter Walsh Trophy to the winning team, St. Patrick's Legamaddy, and complimented all the children on their level of interest in, and knowledge of, their Irish culture.
